Abstract: | On account of their meaningful nature, the extreme conservatism in their use and the consequent survival of many even till the present day, place-names could make some contribution to the reconstruction of the Yoruba past. In Ibadan, the examination of these place-names provides evidence which touches many aspects of the town's history. At least six categories which can be useful for historical reconstruction are discernible: 1. place-names of founders; 2. place-names reflecting the nature of the original settlements; 3. place-names denoting the growth and development of the town; 4. place-names indicating sub-ethnic groups that settled in Ibadan; 5. place-names reflecting political changes in the town; 6. place-names of economic and social significance. Notes; appendix: some Ibadan place-names. |
