Abstract: | This paper's purpose is to determine and analyse the characteristics of the migration field of Kisumu town which has consistently maintained its position as the fourth largest urban centre in Kenya. Throughout the paper it is consistently demonstrated that Kisumu is the principal commercial, industrial and demographic node in Western Kenya. In this regard, it is the chief urban destination of migrants originating from the immediate or distant migration field. Analysis of factors which encourage migration from the migration field of Kisumu shows that it is difficult to rank the factors in order of importance. It seems that the propensity to migrate is an individual decision and consists of a conglomerate of variables whose influences cannot be adequately determined. The Kisumu Region, by virtue of its proximity to the town, demonstrates the importance of the immediate hinterland in a study of an urban migration field. Ref., tab., sum. |
