Abstract:A common observation among staff at the Igbo-Ora Rural Health Centre in Western Nigeria was that many mothers either missed clinic appointments, defaulted from monthly child welfare dates or could not be located on home visit because they had gone out of town on business. The main destination and purpose of travelling seemed to be the national capital, Lagos, for selling local products and foodstuffs. The staff were critical of this activity because they felt it had injurious effects on child health. What follows is a pilot investigation carried out in 1981 into the issue of maternal migrations in Igbo-Ora. Ref.
