Abstract: | A series of single round demographic surveys has been undertaken in central Mali during 1981-82 by a team from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. This paper offers a non-technical summary of the main results. The populations surveyed were the Bambara, the Fulani and the Tamasheq in the inner delta of the Niger and the Gourma. Two points stand out; one is that the very different life styles on the different ethnic groups lead to characteristic patterns of mortality and fertility even in comparable physical environments. Secondly a particular set of ecological factors can have a powerful effect on the mortality and possibly on the fertility of all groups. - Graph., notes, tab. |
