Abstract: | For Luke the birth of the Redeemer was a continuation of the history of salvation which began at the creation of Adam, the first man, and reached its climax in the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus Christ. According to Luke, in the Passion of Jesus God worked out His supreme purpose. After examining Jesus's predictions of his death and the major aspects of the passion narratives, the author examines the significance of Jesus's death on the cross and what Jesus as the Redeemer stands for in the world today, particularly from the African perspective. He notes that covenant making is paramount to African traditional religion, as exemplified by the Yoruba of West Africa, and considers stories of redeemers in Yoruba mythology. The challenge of the incarnation as presented by Luke is that the Church in Africa should look more deeply into the multireligious, multicultural, multipolitical, and multicolonial experience of Africa to see how Jesus can become incarnated as the life-giving redeemer once again, as it were, in Africa, which is in serious agony.
