Abstract:Relatively little is known of the antiquity, sources or routes, and rates of diffusion of the Market institutions in East Africa. Aim of this article is to examine the origins and diffusion of the market idea by reconstructing the diffusion of the words used for market in the languages and dialects spoken in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania Notes, figures.
