Abstract:The energy consumption patterns in Africa are very different. Southern Africa has a coal - dominated energy regime, the energy requirements of the North African States are substantially met by oil (and some gas) whereas in sub-Saharan black Africa, 60-70 per cent of all energy needs are met by firewood. The article describes the problems of oil producing countries as well as those of oil importing countries. It also pays attention to the problems of non-commercial energy sources (deforestation).
