Abstract: | Survey of the earlier literature on colonial Africa, particularly British colonial Africa, and the sort of pressures which brought it into being. In trying to from a general view of the period 1905-1940, one still needs to rely a good deal on works written when colonial rule was still a living reality and African history, as an academic subject, had not yet been invented. The author is not so much concerned with campaign histories, personal memoirs, textbooks, polemic or localised studies of 'traditional' African customs and institutions, as with the growth of knowledge about the large-scale dimensions of African society and its integration with the structures of colonial rule and capitalism.
