Abstract: | The chronology of the wars fought in the Yoruba country during the period c. 1800-1840 is far from being a neglected topic, having attracted in particular the detailed consideration of Bascom (1959), Akinjogbin (1966), and Smith (1969). But there remain substantial areas of Uncertainty and dispute. This paper is an addition to the literature on the subject. It is hoped that although the paper does not give a 'final solution' to the problems, it will be found to contain new ways of looking at the evidence which seem generally to have been overlooked. The author considers separately the wars in northern Yorubaland which grew out of the collapse of the Oyo kingdom, and those in the south which began with the siege and destruction of Owu. He offers suggestions for the chronologies of the wars in both areas. Notes, table. |
