Abstract:Purpose is to examine the role of Koranic courts (Kadhis courts) in asserting and maintaining the boundaries of a social group. Through controlling these courts the Swahili community is able to have a direct influence on some of the areas of life its members look upon as central to the community's proper functioning. After a short description of Weber's distinction between 'ethnic groups' and 'communities', the sections are: a brief history of the Swahili of Mombasa - the interaction of ethnicity and community - changes in the boundary of the Swahili group.
