Abstract: | Since 1994, South Africa has followed a policy of universalism both towards Asia as towards the rest of the world. This policy has been accompanied by concerted efforts to project South Africa as a peacemaker, but also to invite investment, sell arms, promote trade, and seek political and financial support across the Asian region. South Africa's willingness to be friends to all and enemies to none in a region as diverse as Asia raises questions about the general purposiveness of the country's foreign policy. This article gives an overview of South Africa's economic relations with Japan, Malaysia, India, Singapore and Iran; human rights issues and South African relations with the Peoples' Republic of China and East Timor; political considerations in South Africa's relationship with India and its involvement in the Indian Ocean Rim initiative; and the recent tendency towards more selective forms of engagement and South Africa's policy toward Taiwan and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The challenge for South Africa's foreign policymakers is how to make moral issues feature without damaging economic interests. Bibliogr., notes, ref., sum. in German and French. |
