Abstract: | This essay looks at a region of Angola long exposed to colonial influence and domination, at a moment during the later nineteenth century when white and black interests were in close and open conflict. It looks particularly at the relationship of the black chief Kabuku Kambilo with the Portuguese in the last quarter of the nineteenth century, and relates to several different aspects of recent work on Angola and other parts of Africa; it gives an analysis of Kabuku's main concern to maximize his power within the framework of colonial society and politics.
