Abstract: | The decision of the British government to remove the Mixed Commission Courts and the slave suppression squadron from Sierra Leone to Fernando Po in 1826 was the beginning of a short-lived and tragic colonial experiment. After a short exposition of the reasons for this alteration, the article describes the efforts made by Captain Owen and later by his successor Colonel Nicholls to establish a settlement on the island. Most of the problems both men met, were due to a lack of public or official support. Notes. |
