Abstract: | The Sofa Empire of Samori Toure had been established with the aid of a powerful army which also became the backbone of the new state. A significant factor for the stability of the Empire lay on its commercial activity with the forest regions and the coastal states. In this regard it was vital that the trade routes were constantly open and free form the depredations of neighbouring inhabitants, as well as from the French who were determined to cut Samori from his source of arms. These trade routes became increasingly important with the advent of the Dyula merchants. It was between Kankan and Freetown through Falaba that Samori was to establish first contacts with the colony of Sierra Leone. And it was Sierra Leone that was to constitute the greatest external asset in the Empire's survival. Notes. |
