Abstract:Litowa is a TANU Youth League Ujamaa Settlement situated in the Ruvuma Region of Tanzania. The author of this article, a teacher at Litowa School, gives an insight in the kind of programme designed at Litowa on educating the children of members of the village. After stating that only dedicated socialists can bring about the sort of (socialist) society which the country is looking forward to, the author first pays attention to what sort of projects would be suitable for a school to work on. This is followed by: The school and the Community-Patterns of working together - The teaching of Ujamaa and the practice of Ujamaa (1. practical work - 2. lectures - 3. discussions). The aim of the discussions which are divided into committees, discussion groups and the Ujamaa assembly, is to help the pupils to work and learn by understanding and without the necessity of being dictated to. The children are also encouraged to read 'Ujamaa Prayer' and to attend communal Ujamaa gatherings with their parents.
