Abstract:The governing Imbokodvo National Movement again obtained a large, albeit reduced, majority in the General Election in May 1972. The government lost the Mphumalanga constituency, dominated by sugar cane workers, to the most important opposition part, and in most other industrial and urban constituencies did not do as well as in the previous election. The 1972 election is discussed in the sections: Party political organization - Adaptation of the indigenous political system - Election background (and some reasons for the set-back of the governing I.N.M. in the industrial and urban areas).
