Abstract:In 1923 Southern Rhodesia, with a population of 33.000 Whites and approximately 1.000.000 Africans, gained Responsible Government This was achieved in the face of opposition from the Coloaial Office, the existing government of the British South African Company, and the South African government, for it had generally been supposed that the country's future would be linked with that of South Africa. The hostility towards such a course was due to the rise of Afrikaner nationalisme and was encouraged by the British South Afriea Gompany, which was reluctant to relinquish the administration before it had achieved its economic aims. This paper analyses the reasons for the demand for a change of governement earlier than the expected 1924, and examines the political movements that culminated in the vote for Responsible Government in 1922. Mostly the vital factor of the demands of the settlers themselves are ignored. Notes; tables.
