Abstract:The contention here is that the deplorable state of many Nigerian cities is in major part due to the ineffectiveness or lack of urban land development control. The Federal Government of Nigeria recently commissioned a Land Use Panel (1977) to undertake a though review of the various land tenure, land use and land conservation practices in Nigeria and to examine steps necessary for controlling future land use. Perhaps the major task facing this Panel is how to resolve the basic issue of land tenure systems in the country. Purpose of this paper is to examine the land use problems, land ownership and the issues involved in the formulation of land policies for Nigeria. Notes.
