Abstract: | Since the early thirties of the present century, cooperatives have been used by various Nigerian governments to achieve a wide range of objectives in the development of the country. One of the notable areas in which such attempts have been conspicuous is handicrafts. This paper sets out to investigate Nigeria's experience in this sector. It examines the rationale for government policy, analyses the effects of government patronage, and establishes that despite this patronage cooperative handicrafts have not achieved the success expected of them. An attempt is made to show along what lines possible improvements lie. Notes, tab. |
