Abstract: | This article focuses on the labour touts who held African labourers and the mining industry at ransom during the early years of the twentieth century. These intermediaries rather than the institutionalised recruiting agencies of WNLA (Witwatersrand Native Labour Association) and the NRC (Native Recruiting Corporation), clearly influenced the mobilisation and direction of the black labour force.
