Abstract:Examines the impact of the Wage Board's policy on the thorny problem of European/African wage differentials. There is evidence to suggest that European earnings have increased by larger amounts, presumably because they hold a virtual monopoly on skilled labour. This paper sets out the methods and data used to calculate the differentials, analyses the movements of the differentials, and then presents an explanation of the apparent failure of the policy to reduce the difference between European and African wages. Ref., tables: 1. Skilled/unskilled earnings' differentials by industry and urban centre; 2. Skilled/unskilled official differentials by industry and urban centre; 3. Simple correlation coefficients between the Se/Ue and s/u for 1960-65.
