Abstract: | This paper describes the way in which petty commodity production took root amongst the Kholwa community of Edendale (a refugee Christian community in Natal) and bound it into community relations. It shows how the property relations of the people of Edendale articulated with the economic and social changes in Natal as it was transformed into a capitalist economy during the course of the nineteenth century. - App., notes. |
