Abstract: | Serum total protein, albumin and total globulin were determined in Ghanaian women in the last trimester of pregnancy and during lactation in the post-partum year. The results were compared with the levels seen in non-pregnant non-lactating women. There was a significant fall in serum albumin in the pregnant women. But during lactation, serum albumin returned to normal levels after the puerperium while seruia total globulin remained elevated for the first half of the post-partum year. The normal serum albumin levels found during lactation in the present study are in agreement with a previous report from Guatemala but at variance with the reduced serum albumin levels reported from temperate areas. It is probable that woman who normally have a low protein-intake tend to have normal (pre-pregnant) serum albumin levels during lactation. ref., tab. |
