Abstract:This paper is an attempt to discuss the South African situation in terms of its diverse cultural and racial composition and to analyse the social stratification which has emerged from this heterogeneous composition. Not discussing politics the author approaches the subject as a case study in acculturation, as an analysis of the dynamics of contact: Class or Caste in South Africa?; The development of the caste structure; The preconditions of a caste structure? The South African caste-system as a dynamic type. References cited.
