Abstract:Grand Medina is a peripheral area of uncontrolled settlement in Dakar whose future, because it was illegally established and does not form a part of the official urban development plan, is uncertain. So too is the future of its youth, who make up half of its inhabitants. Planning and insuring the future of the young is inextricably linked to the future of the district. The present article describes how the young envision their future in the district through a thematic analysis of interviews held with certain youths in 1978. Notes.
