Abstract: | The relative lack of attention to 20th-century Arabic and Arabic-script documentation has led to the neglect of a number of topics. The author gives a brief overview of the themes that have received the greatest attention. Next, he lists topics that are important focal points for research into historical processes affecting Muslim Africa during the 20th century, viz. pan-Islam, application of the shari'ah, the arts and islamization, pleading for a research agenda that will incorporate the 20th century and 'popular' Islam into future research on Islam and Muslim communities in Africa.
