Abstract:Despite increasing information available on almost every aspect of San life, virtually no current account exists in the literature about death and its treatment among these people. In this article, the author, who was present during or immediately after the deaths of three adult San women in 1973-75, describes briefly the events surrounding these deaths including the subsequent funeral and their aftermath. Sections: the events preceding death - the funeral ceremony - the aftermath - redistribution of property, land and social ties - closing remarks. Notes, ref.
