Abstract:Since the establishment of Western education in Nigeria, formal, vocational and religious education have tended to eclipse liberal education. This paper studies its much neglected history, starting in 1942 with the establishment of one of the first schools for adults which offered non-examination courses. The various concomitant problems are then examined, and the relevance of contemporary liberal education for Nigerian workers is assessed. Sections of the article: Introduction - Liberal education agencies - The Colonial Government's reaction - The Nigerian workers' reaction - The failure of liberal education - Concluding note. Notes; Zusammenfassung im deutsch; Résumé en français.
