Abstract: | The aim of this investigation is twofold: firstly, to examine contemporary Marxist theories of class in order to establish criteria by which different occupations can be assigned to the 'middle class'. Secondly, to apply these criteria to an analysis of the South African 'middle class', using the data collected in the Manpower Surveys (published bienniaily by the Department of Manpower) over the period 1969-1983.
