Abstract:The Hambukushu are a small riverine Bantu-speaking matrilineal society of approximately 16,000 to 18,000 who live mainly along the Okavango River in South West Africa/Namibia, and of the matrilineal custums of the central African peoples. Isolated in a remote region of south central Africa they still observe many of their traditional customs. Those pertaining to engagement and marriage are described in the present article, in the following sections: the forms of engagement - marriage - family composition - bride-service and bride-wealth - the polygynous household - bride capture and elopement.
