Abstract:In matters of kinship, the modern Ndendeuli have recently been described as having traditionnally a non-lineal kinship system (P.H. Gulliver,'Neighbours and networks: the idiom of kinship in social action among the Ndendeuli of Tanzania'. Berkeley, 1971). This article studies the actual situation among the population who became known as the Ndendeuli as a consequence of the Ngoni invasion of southwest Tanzania in the 1840s and shows that Gulliver's description is inaccurate.
