Abstract: | The author has been a member of UNITA since the movement's foundation in 1966. He was UNITA's representative (Minister of Mines and Natural Resources) in Angola's short-lived interim government in 1975. From 1977 to 1981 he was UNITA's Secretary of Information. Since 1981 he has been UNITA's Secretary of Foreign Affairs. He is a Colonel in the 'Armed Forces for the Liberation of Angola' (FALA), UNITA's military wing. The author presents a synoptical review of political development in Angola since the country's independence in November 1975 in which he accounts for the factors influencing that development (three legitimate political parties in Angola; the Soviet-Cuban influence; Western understanding and support; South African interests and influence). |
