Abstract: | This essay examines the nature of ethnic conflicts in Sierra Leone, Ghana, Republic of Benin and Nigeria in order to ascertain the extent to which ethnic conflicts in these societies either emanate from mere ethno-cul-tural pluralism or in fact reflect infra-class conflicts and power struggle among the elites. And when such inter-ethnic conflicts involve non-elite members, it may be helpful to know the relevant factors responsible for such conflicts as well. What is being suggested is that pluralism in the societies under investigation may be treated both as an independent and as a dependent variable: consequently, ethnic pluralism may have consequences for social relations, just as the emergent stratification, or inequality of wealth, status and political power, may also have consequences for the behavior of the ethnically plural segments of West African societies.
