Abstract: | Because of the poor performance of formal irrigation development in many parts of Africa, attention has been focused increasingly on the small-scale approach. This trend has emphasized the improvement of traditional water management practices, or their extension over larger areas, or both. A case study of two major projects in northern Nigeria is discussed in order to draw out lessons for the scope and content of appraisal methods. The paper concludes by stressing the need for wide-ranging appraisal studies, which will anticipate the future effects of uptake of technology. Ref. |
