Abstract:In 1982, the government of Zambia decided to exploit the potential of drawdown land of Lake Kariba and for the first time to develop quick yielding and low-cost irrigation for the poor people of the area. A simple basin irrigated system was designed with minimum structures. Three sub-categories of farmers were involved to find out their reaction to this system: village elders, widows and school dropouts. Preliminary results indicate that the latter two categories would react favrourably to such a system.
