Abstract:This chapter describes the situation of women in slavery in the western Sudan, an area dominated by Mande- and Fulbe-speaking peoples and where two types of slave system recurred: a household mode of production, where slaves, living within the household, working alongside free members of the household, and a slave mode of production, where the slaves lived in separate settlements and their labour was the source of sustenance for a ruling class that did not engage in physical labor.
