Abstract:The irrigation sector in Madagascar is in many ways atypical of African conditions: A large traditional irrigation sector exists, with many centuries of experience and a 'rice-culture' even more reminiscent of South-East Asia. Even the 'modern' sector is relatively long established. The overwhelmingly dominant crop on both 'traditional' and 'modern' irrigation schemes is rice. The current development emphasis is not on the creation of new schemes but on repairs and rehabilitation of long established systems. Map.
