Abstract: | Gumbu Smart lived in the second half of the eighteenth century. In many ways his life provides glimpses into various aspects of social, economic, political, military, and cultural life in Sierra Leone during the late eighteenth century. This article describes Smart's life as a slave, a factor (middleman), a slave trader, a warrior, a ceremonial chief, a legitimate trader and abolitionist. Notes. |
