Abstract:1980 was the turning point in the provision of financial security in old age for black South Africans. A government proposal to preserve pension funds by freezing contributions until retirement age sparked off the so-called pension strikes. These strikes created an awareness of the fact that very little is known about the manner in which black South Africans perceive old age and retirement from wage employment. This paper conveys black expectations and aspirations regarding life In retirement as a basis for the formulation of a realistic social policy for financial security in retirement. The views put forward are those expressed by black men and women participating in a number of surveys conducted since 1981. Bibliogr., notes.
