Abstract: | Proceeding from the contemporary historiography of black Africa, the author demonstrates what are the consequences of the refusal to admit the presence of a discourse on the philosophy of history as an integral part of responsible practice in the profession. This applies both to one's attitude concerning the documentation produced by the Other and one's attitude concerning the form and the content of the discourse of professional historians, black as well as white.
