Title:Third note on the history of the Ethiopian national flag: the discovery of its first exemplar and the new documents on the early attempts by Emperor Menilek to introduce the flag
Author:Chojnacki, StanislawISNI
Year:1980

Geographic term:Ethiopia
Subject:flags
Abstract:The evolution of the Ethiopian national flag has already been described by the writer in two articles published respectively in 1963 and 1969. In the first article the developments prior to the making of the flag in 1897 were described, and how the three pennons, red, green and yellow which the Ethiopians used separately were then sewn together. The second article deals with the simultaneous process of the creation of a myth by the Ethiopians that this flag has its origin in the 'immemorably' old past. The main source of information for both articles were the records by travellers in Ethiopia as well as the few photographs and drawings. The existence of the main piece of evidence, that is the flag made in 1897, was not then suspected. The recent discovery of such a flag and of the additional documents referring to its antecedents justify publication of a third, hopefully the final version on how the Ethiopian flag was created. Ill., notes.
