| Abstract: | Contention of this paper is that the (Marxist) views that Kenya is a mere appendage of international capital are overdrawn and obscure the reality. The forces of neocolonialism are not yet as deeply embedded as they appear to be in many Latin American countries, that as a result there is still room for the growth of an indigenous semi autonomous bourgeoisie, Despite the powerful influences and importance of the branch companies of the MNCs and other agencies of the metropole there has evolved a new nationally based petty and grande bourgeoisie. This class has played a vital role in the institutionalization of commodity relations throughout rural society and this has involved major structural changes between 1954 and 1974. Development of the productive forces of the society has taken place, albeit in partnership with international capitalism. Despite the highly skewed character of the wealth of the society and the remarkable rise to wealth and prominence of its leading men here, a considerable section of the community has achieved a perceptive improvement in their standard of living.
