| Abstract: | This paper discusses the manifestations of anti-intellectualism and its potentially detrimental impact upon the newly emerging nations of Africa. The paper has four major parts: 1) review of the literature on the issue of anti-intellectualism; 2) critical synthesis of the possible roots of anti-intellectualism in Africa; 3) examination of the peculiarities of anti-intellectualism within the ranks of the African professional and political elite in contemporary societies; 4) the dangers of anti-intellectualism. Operationally, anti-intellectualism is used in this paper as meaning 'a resentment and suspicion of the life of the mind and of those who are considered to represent it; and a disposition constantly to minimize the value of that life'.
