Abstract:After a short introduction into the social organization of the Sisala (Northern Ghana) the author discusses two main question with reference to sacrifice and the soul: 'Why is the nature of beliefs about the soul important to the proper understanding of sacrifice?' and 'If the soul is thought to rest eternally in the pleasurable realm of the ancestor's village, why do the ancestors punish their living kinsmen?'. Sections: manifest and latent models of reality - Sisala cosmology - confirmatory sacrifice - piacular sacrifice. Notes.
