Abstract:In the nineteenth century Sudan underwent basic changes in its socio-economic structure, and at the same time fell a prey to colonialism, which was spreading its tentacles over Africa and the world at large. What was the role and reason of Islam and Islamic institutions in this tumultuous era? How far was Islam affected and molded by those internal and foreign forces? This paper is an endeavor to investigate those problems, and to explore the different reactions of Islamic institutions, anti and pro-colonialist, and to investigate the impact of the newly emerging commercial formation on both the ideology and institutions of Islam. - Notes.
