Abstract:A collection of papers, having their origin for the most part in a sustained interest in the development, past and present, of the cultural identity of the Islamic world. ln a sense they may be considered as prolegomena to a longer study on the rise of a Muslim culture consciousness with which the author has been pre-occupied for some time. They include a.o.: The profile of Muslim civilization (p. 1-30) Government in Islam (- an attempt to describe in a small number of propositions the essential structure of Muslim government. Attention is focussed on the classical period of Islamic political science from Mâwardî (d. 1085) to Ibn Taimiyya (d. 1328) (p. 127-140). The structure of the Muslim town (p. 141-158).
