Abstract: | Edited and translated by B.G. Martin. Carl Heinrich Becker's 'Materialen zur Kenntnis des Islam in Deutsch-Ostafrika' (1911, repr. 1932), although in many respects quite out of date and with a number of minor errors, remains an important source for Islam as it was in the latter German colonial period and to some extent as it is now. It shows many of the views and attitudes of an 'establishment' German orientalist towards the 'problem of Islam' in what was then a German colony. In this English translation Becker's errors have been corrected in footnotes. New translations directly from Arabic into English have been made for the khutba for Sultan 'Abd al-Hamid II and for the so-called 'Makka Letter' from the original text preserved at the National Archives of Tanzania, Dar es Salaam.
