Abstract:To what extent can the traditional customs theory help in analysing the potential for and the development of inter-state trade in economic and customs unions like the Central African Customs and Economic Union (UDEAC)? To the extent that the traditional customs union theory was developed with a view to guiding decision-makers in countries that may want to form customs and economic-unions, an examination of inter-state trade in the UDEAC in the light of the existing theory becomes pertinent. To this end, section 2 of this article sets the background and analyses briefly the salient features of the theory. Section 3 critically examines the various factors that are said to determine trade creating and trade diverting effects of a customs union and the development of inter-state trade in the UDEAC. Section 4 spells out the need for analysing the potential for economic integration among African nations within the context of the potential for economic development which involves the structural transformation of the member States.
