Abstract: | Despite very obvious attractions of a wide geographical approach, region building has encountered serious obstacles, and in some instances a process of disintegration can be said to have come into evidence. In the light of efforts at African region building which can be anticipated in years to come, this article examines more closely the different integrationist resources available to policy makers in two distinct time horizons - the colonial and postcolonial periods. Sections: Command and bargaining models and the integration process - Hegemonially initiated integration - The postcolonial bargaining process - Additional decision-making burdens (the Uganda Coup of 1971) - Conclusion.
