Abstract: | A new monetary union came into effect on the 1st November, 1962. This West African Monetary Union consists of the Ivory Coast, Dahomey, Upper Volta, Mauritania, Niger and Senegal, The original treaty, signed May 1962, included her own currency. The French Banque Centrale Des Etats de L'Afrique de l'Ouest which issued the French African Franc, has been replaced by a new issuing authority which is jointly controlled by the Union's members, including France. The new Franc, still known as the Franc CFA and still worth two old French Francs, is now known as the African Financial Community Franc. The results of the union have been surveyed in the latest information bulletin of the Banque Centrale. A statistical table shows the value in £M. of imports and exports of the individual members of the Union in their trade with France, E.E.C., Africa, Rest of World, Total World, in 1961 and 1960, and also the figures of the West African Customs Union. |
